Leonardo DaVinci used art and text to express the ideas and theories behind
Vitruvius, a first century Roman architect and author of 'De Architectura libri X'. The Vitruvian ideas, illustrated by Leonardo, constructed the basis of Renaissance proportion theories in both, art and architecture.
Vitruvius discussed symmetry and proportion as a relation to the building of temples. The Vitruvian man shows the perfect portrayal of the Golden Ratio, which is also found in all other organisms, including animals such as butterflies, frogs, etc. He believed that the proportions and measurements of the human body were mirror perfection. Therefore proposed that a properly constructed temple should be strictly related to the parts of the human body. He noted that a human body can be symmetrically inscribed within both a circle and a square; this idea influenced his architectural expertise.
